move your insurance documents to DigiLocker

DigiLocker is an initiative under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology’s (MeitY) Digital India programme, where citizens can get authentic documents or certificate in digital format from the original issuers. As of date, there are 56.09 million registered users of the facility, with 4.26 billion authentic documents issued on the platform by over 900 issuer organisations.

For Aadhar cardholders, the facility provides an online account with up to 1GB of storage free of cost. All the various document issuers (such as insurance companies) registered with the DigiLocker can then issue your documents directly into your digital locker account. You can then share these documents wherever and with whomever, as per the requirement. Since it would be produced via the DigiLocker, it will be considered authentic proof of the insurance document/policy copy.

How to avail the facilities of a DigiLocker?

Open an account with DigiLocker.gov.in. The facility can be accessed through the DigiLocker app on both iOs and Android phones. You can use Aadhaar to sign up using mobile OTP or in case of non-availability of Aadhaar, one can authenticate mobile number and submit proof of address and identity documents for verification.

How many insurance companies are there on DigiLocker?

As per a tweet by DigiLocker’s official account – 6 General Insurance companies (Bajaj Allianz, ICICI Lombard, New India, Reliance General, Future Generali, GoDigit) and 2 Life Insurance Companies (Max Life, Bajaj Allianz Life) are already on DigiLocker and have issued 430 million policies. Another 31 insurance companies (15 life and 16 General/Non-Life) are soon to follow suit.

Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDAI), in a circular on February 9, 2021, has advised all insurance companies to issue Digital Insurance Policies via DigiLocker.

“To promote the adoption of DigiLocker in the insurance sector, the Authority advises all insurers to enable their IT systems to interact with DigiLocker facility to enable policyholders to use DigiLocker for preserving all their policy documents.”

Why You Should Opt for the DigiLocker Facility

By availing of the DigiLocker facility, you will eliminate the issue of non-delivery or delay in the delivery of insurance policy copy, and opt-in for a better customer experience since the documents will be at your fingertips.

This would lead to smooth claims processing and settlement, reduction in disputes, reduction in fraud and improvement in contactability with the insurance company.

The last thing you want to worry about while facing a health emergency or a car/bike accident and trying to locate your insurance policy copies. Not only is it cumbersome, but, being dependent on a paper-based document repository often cripples you in the wake of an exigency. Timely access to policy copies and producing authentic documents enabled by DigiLocker facility to your hospital/car workshop etc. will save you mental agony and ensure timely settlement of claims.
